Abstract

Fatigue; is a frequent symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS) interfering with activities of daily life. Fifty-five to 75 per cent of MS patients who experience fatigue consider it one of the three most debilating symptoms. Multiple sclerosis fatigue appears to be a distinct clinical entity which is generally unrelated to either depression and neurological impairment. There is no proven definite etiology for MS fatigue and immune dysfunction with release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, observed impairments in motor drive and in muscular oxidative capacity are pathogenetic mechanisms proposed. Disturbed sleep and psychological factors can exacerbate MS fatigue. Because of various influencing factors, treatment requires a multidiciplinary approach. The progress in understanding MS fatigue will lead to more effective drug therapies.
