Abstract

A door to door survey of 5769 persons in Alibaba district of Sivas was conducted to find the prevalence of migraine, epilepsy, epilepsy in patients with migraine and migraine in patients with epilepsy. Pedigrees of families of both migrainous patients and randomly selected 64 families as control were constructed. Chi square test was utilized for statistical analysis. The prevalences of migraine, epilepsy, epilepsy in migrainous population and migraine in epileptic population were 3.68% (212 cases), 0.94% (54 cases), 6.6% and 25.93%, respectively. Both the prevalences of epilepsy in migrainoursand the prevalences of migraine in epileptic population were 7 times higher than the general population. The frequency of epilepsy in cases of migraine with aura was 8 times higher than those in cases of migraine without aura. Among first degree relatives of migrainous population, the frequency of migraine was 5.8 times higher than the control group, while the frequency of migraine in second degree relatives of migrainours were not significantly different from those of control group. The frequency of epilepsy among the relatives of migrainous patients was not significantly different in comparison with the relatives of the control group.
