Abstract

ln this article cellular and molecular mechanisms of the genesis and spreading of epileptic seizure are discussed with review of the current literature. In recent years, the changes in ionic currents and receptor subtypes playing a role in epileptogenesis have been described in detail parallel to the advances in electrophysiology and molecular hiology techniques. The basis of ''sprouting" and "dormont basket cell" hypotheses which may explain increased excitation, derived from the experimental studies and investigation of pathological specimens obtained from patients with mesial temporal sclerosis. The neuronal loss associated with either necrotic or apoptotic process has been investigated. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of epileptogenesis will provide new therapeutic strategies.
