Abstract

Latest research strongly suggest the role of oxydative stress on ischemic and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system. There is a physiological equilibrium of oxydant and antioxydant molecules under normal conditions. Oxydant molecule excess results in tissue breakdown. The unsufficiency of the known antioxydant agents; vitamin C, vitamin E, superoxydase dismutase, catalase and glutation peroxydase increasesthe oxydative stress and may be responsible for the pathogenesis of the diseases. The relationship between the ischemic heart disease and vitamin E deficiency was shown in various studies. The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between vitamin E deficiency and obstructive cerebrovascular disease. Eighty patients (40 male, 40 female) with obstructive cerebrovascular disease were included in the study. The mean age was 56.8 within avarge of 44-69. The control group included 3 males and 15females with a mean age of 50.3 (40-65). The serum levels were measured with HPLC method. Serum vitamin E levels was significantly lower in the patient group.
