Abstract
It was shown that hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor premature atherosclerosis and vascular occlusive disease. To determine whether byperbomocysteiııemia is a risk factor for ischemic stroke, plasma homocystein levels were measured in 155 stroke patients and 40 control subjects. The mean plasma homocystein level was 21.84±8.5 µmol/l in stroke patients and 1032 ± 4.28 µmol/l in control group. Difference between two groups was significant (p<0.001). Additionally, we couldn't detect any risk factor except hyperhomocysteinemia in 9 patients with stroke. Results of this study indicate thatmild or moderate hyperhomocysteinemia might be a risk factor for stroke.
