Abstract

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the P300 component of event-related potentials(ERP) in epileptic patients, and compare them with age-matched controls. The study groups consisted of 37 complex partial epilepsy (CPE) patients, 55 idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) patients and 40 control subjects. All patients were selected according to the criteria of ILAE. All patients were treated with monotherapy; 49 patients were treated with carbamazepine, 15 with phenytoin, 28 with valproic acid. The P300 waves recorded from Pz, Cz and Fz using auditory oddball paradigm. The P300 latencies were significantly longer and amplitüdes were lower in CPE patients compared with those in IGE patients and controls. Patients with long duration of epilepsy had significantlyprolonged P300 latencies compared to those short duration of epilepsy. In conclusion; we found that P300 changes are related with type, duration and frequency of seizure. No significant effect of used major antiepileptic drugs on P300 were found.
