Abstract
Background: The lnternet, as we know it up to this point, has a long history going back to research with the satellites and military computer networking (-ARPAnet). Today İnternet connects its 679 million users via cables and satellites. lnternet use was widespread by neurologists and patients at accessing the knowledge, consultations and also seeking support. Objective: To explore how neurologists and patients use the İnternet and to analyze advantages and disadvantages of the internet use. Review summary: First, advantages and disadvantages of the specific internet access techniques such as html, e-mail, e-groups are overviewed. Second, the growing availability of large databases, powerful search engines, online full-text journals and free publishing is discussed. Finally, some of the problematic issues concerning medical use of the lnternet are discussed, including availability, validity, security, quality and outcomes. Conclusions: lnternet is a major way both for physicians and patients to obtain information about the relevant topics and it will become increasingly significant in the practice of neurology. Despite overall improvement in access to information, major barriers stili exist. But plasticity of İnternet may overcome this issue.
