Evaluation of Etiology in the One-and-a-Half Syndrome

Abstract
Scientific Background: The one-and-a- half sydrome is a clinical disorder of extraocular movements characterized by a conjugate horizontal gaze palsy in one direction plus an internuclear ophthalmoplegia at the other. Before age 40, the cause is usually multiple sclerosis (MS), after age 40, it is usually ischemic cerebr ovascular disease (ICVH).Objectives: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated etiologic causes in the patients with diagnosis of one-and-a-half sydrome in SSK Tepecik Teaching Hospital Neurology Clinic between in 1995-2002. Findings: Nine had cerebrovascular disease, two had multiple sclerosis and the other one had Behcet's disease. Conclusion: In the one-and-a half syndrome while it is usually caused ICVH after age 40, MS and other causes are considered, before 40 age.
