The Relationship Between The Lipoprotein(a) Levels and lnfarct Volume And Prognosis In Atherothrombotic Stroke Patients

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of the plasma Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)J levels with the infarct volume and prognosis in patients with atherothrombotic cerebral infarction.Methods: The study was performed on 21 stroke patient who had been treated in the neurology clinic in the years 1998-1999 and 22 controls. The age range of the patients and control groups were 32-80 (63,6 I ± 11 ,17) and 50-65 (58,86 ± 4,5) respectively.The patient group consisted of the cases with atherothrombotic middle cerebral artery infarction without atrial fıbriation . The severity of the stroke and prognosis were evaluated with Barthell scale.The plasma Lp(a) levels examined were measured in the fırst week and in the second month in afi patients.The infarcts detected by cranial imaging wereclassifıed as small, medium and large.Results: Plasma Lp(a) levels were 29,33 ± 26, 18 mg/dl and 22,5 7 ± 14,6 f mg/dl in the fırst week and second month respectively for the patient group.The control group had mean Lp(a) level of 26,55 ± 28,79 mgldl. There were no correlations betweenLp(a)levels and Barthell scale scores neither in acute nor in chronic periods. Comparing the infarct volumes with Lp(a) levels we could not fınd statistically signifıcant correlation for the fırst week and second month.Conclusion: We could not fınd any correlation between lipoprotein (a) levels and cranial imaging fındings and prognosis in this study that we performed in relatively small number of patients with atherothrombotic cerebral infarct.
