Abstract

Scientific background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurologic disease with diverse variable symptoms which creates varying levels of disability inducing functional impairments. In recent years, most emphasis was brought on the means of managing MS caused disability. Thus rehabilitation is gaining a special importance for MS patients. Objectives: The aim of this article is to review the rehabilitation methods for MS in the light of current information. Patients and methods: In this article, we evaluate the data obtained from the rehabilitation of patients who referred to the MS outpatient clinic and Neuroimmunology Unit of Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine, Istanbul University and review the literature pertaining to this subject. Results: Due to the existence of considerable patient dependent differences in the course of MS, the rehabilitation programs must be individually tailored. Patients must be rehabilitated considering their personal requirements and targets with due respect to their existing disability level. Maximal independence in daily living activities should be aimed to by recommending suitable assisting devices.

Conclusions: Although not effecting the course of the disease, a multi-disciplinary approach to rehabilitation often results in symptomatic alleviation of neurological disorders, reducing disability level and increasing
