Subcortical Global Aphasias

It is known that subcortical structures of the dominant hemisphere have an important rolein language. Different aphasia forms have been observed depends on lesion localisation on subcortical area. In this study 20 patients with global aphasia were examined. Their CT scan have shown one ar more lesions in nucleus caudatus, thalamus, anterior andposterior limbs of internal capsule, globus pallidus, putamen and periventricular whitematter. In 12 of 20( 60 %) were shown hematoma ar infarct in putamen and periventricular white matter. Our findings suggested that putamen and periventricularwhite matter in subcortical region were important areas which cause ta global aphasia.
