Objective: High level of fibrinogen and low level of albumin are associated with occurrence of ischemic stroke and severity of disease in previous research.FAR, as a recently described rational parameter, has been studied in several diseases associated with inflammation and pro-coagulation such as retinal venous occlusion, coroner artery disease, cancers. We aim to search the usefulness of FAR in the diagnosis of ischemic stroke and the prediction of its severity and prognosis.
Materials and Methods: The study consists of fifty-two acute ischemic stroke patients and thirty-nine control cases between the ages of 18 and 80. Demographics, medical history, primary diagnosis, examination findings, imaging findings and laboratory tests of all patients were derived from our hospital records. Stroke severity were classificated into 3 groups as mild, moderate and severe. FAR values were compared between stroke and control groups, and between stroke severity groups.SPSS 23.0 (IBM) was used for statistical analysis,p<0.05 was considered to significancy.
Results: FAR values and fibrinogen levels were significantly higher, albumin levels was lower in stroke patients than control group (p<0.001). The cut-off value of FAR was 6.65 for diagnosis the acute ischemic stroke, it was the most sensitive and specific than albumin and fibrinogen. There was no significant differences between severity stages of stroke, etiologic subgroup of stroke, length of hospitalization day and short-term prognostic effect on stroke patients in terms of FAR, fibrinogen and albumin(p>0.05).
Conclusion: In our study; we suggested that FAR would be a novel, sensitive and specific diagnostic marker for acute ischemic stroke patients but it would be insufficient to predict stroke severity, etiology and short term prognosis.
