In order to evaluate the prognostic value of SPECT in 14 aphasic stroke patients, we have planned ta perform SPECT seans in the acute phase (within 48 hours) and to perform language evaluation with GAT within 10 days. Both tests were repeated 14.3 (9-19) months later. Except two patients, there were varying degrees of hypoperfusion in the SPECT. The patients were separated into two groups according ta the perfusion defect was below or above 60 %. In the group whose perfusion defect was below 60 %, there was a significant difference between the average GAT scores at the begining and folow-up which were 43.2±33.0 and 58.2±31.9 respectively (p<0.05). There was no correlation between the size of the perfusion defect and the recovery of aphasia . We concluded that SPECT performed in the acute phase may contribute ta predict the aphasiaprognosis.

Keywords: Aphasia, prognosis, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)
