Chronic Migraine: Burden, Comorbidities and Treatment

Chronic migraine (CM) is defined by the presence of headache attacks on 15 days or more per month for at least three months, with the migraineous features on at least 8 days per month. CM is defined as a separate entity on the International Classification of Headache Disorders and medication overuse headache is not regarded as exclusion criteria in last version of classification. CM is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disorder. It’s estimated that over 10% per cent of migraine patients suffering from CM. Patients suffer more prominent disease related decrease of quality of life, occupational and educational absenteeism. CM have significant burden of disease with direct and indirect costs on population and healthcare systems. Comorbid medical conditions have roles on chronification, course and management. Treatment of CM is not only essential to recover quality of life of sufferers, but also could provide lessening of burden of disease and economical costs. In this paper we reviewed CM definitions, burden of disease, comorbid disorders and management.
