Objective: It is aimed to describe the causes of the intubation of patients with the diagnosis of middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarct requiring mechanical ventilation by evaluating the clinical and radiological features in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Materials and Methods: The patients with MCA infarct who required mechanical ventilation were evaluated retrospectively in the NICU. All patients' age, gender, risk factors of stroke, lesion topography, etiology and treatment of stroke, cause of intubation, percentage of extubation, death/discharge status were recorded.
Results: It is found that between 01.06.2009 and 31.12.2015, 91 stroke patients with MCA infarction were mechanically ventilated in NICU. Fifty patients were intubated with neurological causes and 40 patients needed intubation due to cardiopulmonary problems. It was detected that that a patient was followed up in NICU after the operation for diaphragmatic hernia.
Conclusion: The patients with MCA infarction who are followed up at mechanical ventilator have poor prognosis. This group of patients constitutes elderly individuals who are at risk for vascular and organ failure. Their follow-ups must be done in NICUs.
